Vacancy at Emoyeni

Emoyeni Retreat Centre is looking for a resident staff member to join our small community.

We are currently looking for someone who knows his/her way around a tool box
and who can assist with maintenance of the grounds and buildings of Emoyeni.

Emoyeni is a Buddhist Retreat centre located on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg. We offer regular weekend retreats here on Buddhism as well as on practices that compliment this practice.

Our community includes four residents who are responsible for the running and upkeep of the centre. Although each resident has their own portfolio, we also work together in hosting and creating a welcoming environment for our guests. We currently have a vacancy for one of these resident positions.

Position: Maintenance manager

Any combination of the following skills would be valuable to us:

  • Building and/or maintenance skills (handy man)
  • Gardening know-how and interest
  • Service industry experience

Other handy skills (great to have but not a deal breaker if you don’t):

  • Admin and office skills
  • Cooking skills or kitchen management
  • Overseeing housekeeping
  • Social media skills

Important requirements:

  • A familiarity or keen interest in Buddhist practice
  • The ability to work with people as well as being able to enjoy solitude
  • Self-motivated and reliable
  • Initiative and a good attitude

At Emoyeni we try to find a balance between being and doing, we don’t always get this right, but we keep trying. The post offers full board and lodging at our beautiful centre and a small stipend in exchange for a 30 hour work week.

Living on a retreat centre in the bush means different kinds of chores and jobs to those of a nine-to- five city job. At times the work can be physical and demanding but here you wake to birdsong, breathe fresh mountain air and listen to the birds and the bush quieten down at dusk. Working at Emoyeni entails a lot more than living and working in a restful and beautiful centre in the Magaliesberg. Doing service here is a way of being part of something much bigger than yourself.

The ideal candidate would be someone who has been on retreat here or elsewhere and has a keen interest in Buddhist practise. Please send your CV and cover letter to
