Thinking & the Art of Being – the Alexaner technique

When you stop doing you don’t cease to exist, you merely commence…

Jana Cilliers and Leάn de Wet

The Australian actor, F.M Alexander (1869-1955), developed an educational process around consciously recognizing our fixed, habitual patterns in relation to movement and cognition. From an ‘Alexandrian’ perspective the thinking brain and the nervous system are deeply intertwined and relate to each other in very much the same way as a servant does to a master. But who would be the master? The Alexander principle is a technique that helps introduce, establish and maintain a beneficial relationship between these two partners, where the thinking brain is nurtured and taught how to take the reins and not be overcome by the very powerful nervous system.

We hope to introduce you to the wonders of the Alexander principle. That it is a set of ideas that describe the psychophysical workings of the human organism as an integrated whole and that it is indeed a method that teaches the means whereby this integration can be refined using what FM Alexander called inhibition and direction.
