How to haiku

Stephen Coan

“There is not a particle of life which does not bear poetry within it”
                                                            – Gustave Flaubert

The three-line seventeen-syllable haiku is the shortest of poetic forms and in some respects one of the most profound. The best haiku connect a fleeting moment to the timeless and it’s no coincidence that many of the finest practitioners of the form have close connections to the Zen Buddhist tradition. This weekend we will learn about the history of the haiku and its masters, Basho, Buson, Issa and Shiki, as well their heirs from around the world, including South Africa. We will also look at approaches to writing haiku, the various rules, as well as exploring the crucial link between meditation and haiku that finds us on the borders of language and silence.

Please bring a pencil and small notebook that will fit into your pocket.
