On this retreat we explore and combine two of the three Internal Martial Arts of China, specifically the Yang Family style of Tai Chi, and the internal art of Yin Style Baguazhang.

  • Tai chi, also called tai chi chuan, is a non-competitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. It is low impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints, making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels. Tai chi can be a positive part of an overall approach to improving your health, the benefits of regular practice include: Decreased stress, anxiety and depression; Improved mood; aerobic capacity, energy and stamina; Improved flexibility, balance and agility as well as improved muscle strength and definition.
  • Yin Style Baguazhang is a combative “art of striking while moving” practice. Its theoretical and technical qualities originate from and accord with an ancient Chinese classic of philosophy known as the Book of Changes. It is this philosophy which gives us the rules of the circle and square. Drawn from the symbolism and meaning of the Eight Trigrams in the Book of Changes, Yin Style Bagua has eight distinct systems within the art. Each of these systems, represented by a trigram and particular animal, stands on its own as a complete martial art with unique developmental methods and fighting strategy.

This retreat will cover elements of the Lion Baguazhang System. The Lion system emits force using the waist and a unified, ‘whole body force’. Training the lion system will benefit the function of the brain; strengthen bones and connective tissue; open up and remove blockages in the qi meridians; build qi; build strength; improve fighting ability and resistance to attack; improve the body’s sense of touch (martial “listening” ability); and develop a solid foundation for turning, striking, and changing practices.

We will also explore the Tai Chi Straight Sword form as well as some techniques that can be used in self-defence. No prior Tai Chi or martial arts experience necessary.
