“Lighthouses don’t go running all over an island looking for boats to save;
they just stand still and shine.” Anne LamottWhy do we find it so difficult to be kind or gentle or good to ourselves? Perhaps it’s because we were raised within the paradigm that good people put the needs of others first – we believe that we need to sacrifice ourselves to show that we care. Or, is it simply that finding time for self-care means one more thing on an already unobtainable to-do-list?
The Buddha’s teachings emphasise the importance of taking care of ourselves – the wisdom of this teaching tells us that when we are kind and good to ourselves, we are automatically much more so to others. So, what if caring for ourselves wasn’t that difficult? What if, by a few adjustments or re-tuning of our emotions, thoughts or attitude patterns, we could find that calm place on the merry-go-round where we are able to deal with, or handle what, life throws at us with grace and style. This retreat will be looking at various practical and meditative tools that will be able to help us to do just that.
